Who's the scariest cat fiend ever? A menace with sharp fangs and a black cape?
Count Catula, of course, ruler of Transylvania, keeper of Castle Catula. When The Count moves into Castle Catula it will be up to Jonathan Clawer, Miss Meowna, the bitten Purrcy, Arthur Combgood and the incredible Dr. van Hissing himself to snuff him out.
Will they be able to snuff Catula before Miss Meowna gets bitten?
Catula is the take-off of the original horror classic, Dracula written by Bram Stoker. It's written in the same diary style as the original book Dracula with loads of laughs for young readers.
Catula A Dark Tale of Cat Madness Animonsters edition by Julie Schronk Children eBooks
As a lover of vampire tales, especially spoofs thereof, and as a lover of all things feline, I was immediately drawn to Julie Schronk's "Catula," a book that could well become the basis for an animated cartoon movie. It's a re-telling of Bram Stoker's novel, "Dracula," except that all of Schronk's characters are cats, cats of all shapes and sizes--and even accents. They dress like humans, can man (cat?) ships and drive carriages, yet they have certain definitely feline traits. Stoker's "Jonathan Harker," for example, once cut himself while shaving his beard; but Schronk's "Jonathan Clawer" cuts himself while trimming his cat whiskers. Later, Jonathan Clawer, frightened by his previous experiences with Catula, hides under a bed and won't come out, despite being cajoled by friends.Turning all of them into cats was a clever idea, and usually presented in a clever way, puns, cat-behavior, and all, though sometimes I felt that the writing showed signs of labor; and a need for professional proof-reading.
The author says that "Catula" is meant for children 8-12 years old. I'm not sure about that. Admittedly, no one in my extended family has been that young for many years now, but I wonder if "Catula" will be more appreciated by older people, those thoroughly familiar with Stoker's classic and thus better able to catch all the puns and catty remarks in this book. As a cartoon movie, on the other hand, it would make no difference--all ages could appreciate Schronk's opus. So I urge the author to search for a literary agent who specializes in movie scripts.
All in all, I will not paws in saying that this is a fun book and a quick read.
