Winter Seedlings is a story of survival from childhood sexual abuse, the journey to heal the heart, mind, and body. It is a story rich with characters struggling to define their sexuality, reach self-acceptance, and understand what it means to be loved.

Jute’s mother married Earl in 1984. Within minutes of moving into his trailer in Maryville, Tennessee, they were shown just how evil he could be. Her sister chose to try to please him. Jute chose to try to avoid him. If she could, Jute would have made herself invisible. Instead, she made herself repulsive, even frightening. This kept Earl’s hands off her, so it didn’t matter if people mistook her for a boy or call her a freak. Jute was certain she didn’t need love anyway, didn’t want it. She didn’t even know how to love. But if she did, she would love Allie.

Allie is beautiful, wears vintage dresses, and craves approval. She has suffered her own abuse, but she blames herself. She knows if she becomes a better person, a person worth loving, a person willing to give up everything, a man will love her. If only Allie could see herself through Jute’s eyes…

When Allie inadvertently puts Jute in danger, they are forced to face their demons. If they drop their guard, will love be able to penetrate their scars and repair their hearts, or will their self-loathing destroy them before it can?

This work is technically very well written, but the author seems to take great delight in visiting cruelties on the well-developed characters for whom the reader is likely to develop strong emotional attachments. Days after finishing, I am trying to wipe this disturbing story from my memory. The ending left me despondent and in a melancholic state from which I've yet to recover.

If you experience enough disappointments in real life that you do not wish to have your reading seasoned also with dread, give this book a wide berth.

If, on the other hand, you find HEAs to be "chewing gum for the mind", worthy only of your contempt, you needn't hesitate to make this your next read.

Winter Seedlings Julie Roberts Towe 9780990800705 Books Reviews

Thank you for this beautiful, heartbreaking story. I can't remember the last time I went through so many different emotions while reading a book. You managed to incorporate so many important issues into a beautifully crafted tale. I look forward to the sequel. Loved the music references, by the way!
I LOVED this book. It broke my heart so many times and couldn't have felt more real. Once I got going, it did not get closed until the end. I'm looking forward to her next!
Set in the very accurately and vividly described Appalachian region of the south Julie Roberts Towe's first novel explorers a topic that is often overlooked and ignored in our society even today. Good read!! I'm waiting for the next one by this new to the scene writer.
This was a wonderful book I highly recommend to anyone. Jute and Allie were both well liked characters. A few times I found myself choking up because of the siltations they were in. (I won't drop spoilers) Once or twice I needed to put the book down and step away simply because I was over whelmed with emotions. It was wonderfully wrote. I was on the edge of my seat, fighting tears, for most of the read.
I found myself lost in the time and era these characters are living. Reading thru the book you experience the emotions and trials they face. Not having lived with the feelings these people share it was easily written to where you can experience their true identities in a very intriguing way. Having lived in this area all my life it ties the path these girls travel together so very real and yet exposed. I just want to visit them and learn more about their lives! Very well written and I look forward to the sequel to follow.
Winter Seedlings tells the story of two girls growing up in a small Southern town. Both excel academically, which opens some doors for them, but both are hindered in different ways. The abuses they endure are more acceptable to their community than the budding feelings they have for each other. All they have is each other, and at times that is stretched very thin. The set out on a journey, both of miles and maturity, and along the way discover that family can be chosen.

Because of the themes of abuse, abandonment, and rejection it isn't always an easy read, but the writing is so compelling that I couldn't put the book down. It walks the line between heart-warming and -breaking, keeping you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the very end.
First off, let me tell you how completely stunned I was that this was a first novel. It does not read that way, by any means. Second, I have to say I was a little disappointed at how has categorized it was "gay" literature. Now, maybe the author or publisher chooses that. But, to me, that limits this wonderful book. Are there some gay folks in it? Yes. Are there some gay issues? Yes. But, it deals with so much more. Let me review, and maybe you'll read it yourself and figure out where you think it belongs. This is my first book review, so please bear with me. I've started and stopped several times, mainly because I keep dropping spoilers. It's hard to tell the bare bones parts of this book without ruining the beautiful flow of the plot for someone.
The book is set in the 1990s in a small town in the South. Right off, it took me back to my heady days of shoulder pads, acid wash jeans and hair bands. This was the time of MY youth, so perhaps it resonated even more with me, due to that. Jute has a pretty bad life, but she has a pretty wonderful friend. And, that, as the book shows, can sometimes make it bearable. Through a series of circumstances that would be very spoiler-ish If I listed them, the girls wind up in Myrtle Beach, and meet some folks as conflicted as they are. Through a return trip, they begin to forge a family of their own. But, as friendships do, Jute & Allie get separated, and the friendship falls by the wayside, at least for one of them.
With themes of sexual abuse and the varying ways its victims cope, this is not always an easy read. But, it's a can't-put-it-down read. The kind that keeps you up until 1am. The kind that makes you scream to know what happens next when it ends. You feel so emotionally invested in these characters, that they are real to you. I actually cried at certain parts of the book, which is rare for me.
